Hinder's story began in 2001 when Austin Winkler and Cody Hanson, childhood friends, started jamming together. They recruited Joe Garvey, Mike Rodden, and Mark King to complete the lineup. The band's name, Hinder, was inspired by a line from a joke: "What would you call a band that 'hinders' your ability to make good life choices?" The quintet began performing locally, eventually catching the attention of independent label, Independent Label Services.
