Winter Garden is a historical fiction novel that explores the complex relationship between two estranged sisters and their emotionally distant Russian mother.
The story then jumps forward to the present day, where Lillian is struggling to come to terms with her past and her relationship with her sister. When Lillian discovers that she has inherited a large sum of money from a distant relative, she decides to use it to buy a house in a small town in Washington state, where she hopes to reconnect with her sister and find solace.
