If you open the save file in Notepad++ or VS Code, you'll see a massive text blob. The formatting uses strict UTF-8 encoding. Do not use standard Windows Notepad (it adds BOM headers that break the game). Use Notepad++ or Sublime Text .

This is a classic v1.6 conversion bug. The game cannot read the file header. Open the folder, check the file size of your main save. If it is 0kb, it is dead (restore from backup).
