Set in a dystopian near-future where oil is scarce and society has collapsed, the story follows a drifter known only as "Max" (Gibson). Driving a modified V8 Interceptor, Max wanders the wasteland until he encounters a small, fortified oil refinery besieged by a violent marauder gang led by the imposing Lord Humungus. Max strikes a deal to help the refinery's defenders escape in exchange for a tanker truck of fuel, leading to a climactic and high-speed chase sequence across the desert.
The characters in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior are more developed and complex than in the first film. Max is still a tough, stoic hero, but he's also shown to be more vulnerable and human. Lady and her people are well-developed and relatable, with distinct personalities and motivations.
The film opens with a newsreel-style narration explaining the collapse. We then meet Max, scavenging for fuel. He is ambushed by a gang of marauders led by the psychotic Wez. Max kills one of them, takes his fuel, and escapes, but not before Wez vows revenge.
The film won the (1982) and influenced decades of games ( Fallout , Borderlands ), films, and comics.
